COLORS AND MEANINGS OF SAFETY ICON

All the different safety pictograms are made according to internationally established principles. The well-thought-out combination of colour and shape give the sign a one-sided meaning. We can distinguish the following colours and shapes:

• Prohibition icon. This safety pictogram is indicated by a white sign with a red circle, often with a red stripe.
• Commandment Icon. This safety icon is blue and round.
• Warning icon. A yellow triangle indicates danger.
• Rescue and evacuation icon. This safety pictogram is indicated by a green square or rectangle.
• Fire fighting pictogram. This icon is usually square and bright red.
• Hazardous substances pictogram. This safety pictogram is often indicated by a white sign with a red border in the shape of a diamond.

By means of symbols the meaning becomes even more specific. For example, a prohibition pictogram with a red stripe without a symbol indicates a general ban on, but if you add a cigarette symbol here, it becomes a 'no smoking' safety pictogram.  

VISIBILITY SAFETY PICTOGRAM

Not only is the combination of colour, shape and symbol important, but also the placement of the safety pictograms. The signs communicate certain risks or provide instructions, exactly where they are needed. If a safety pictogram is noticed too late, or if it is hung somewhere where it is not relevant, it completely misses its target. In addition, good visibility is essential. The ISO 3864 standard calculates the minimum dimensions of a safety pictogram according to a formula, so that they can be read at all times. In addition, attention must be paid to the incidence of light. Safety pictograms for escape routes, rescue equipment and fire fighting must remain clearly visible even in the event of a power failure.
